Child Placement
The adoption program will provide all services necessary to support placement of a child in an adoptive home. We provide as needed: short-term foster care placements for infants; preparing legal papers and appearing in court as necessary; providing post-placement supervisory visits as required by law; and finalization services. For couples who choose to locate a birth mother on their own, we provide information about the Identified Adoption Law and assist couples to ensure compliance with the law. We will give you advice and support for advertising and networking. For people who wish to adopt from other countries, we provide homestudies, INS assistance, and other services to help you work with licensed agencies which place children from those countries.
China Adoption Program
Our China Adoption Program was started in 1995 in order to meet the needs of thousands of children in Chinese orphanages and the many Americans wishing to adopt. We provide orientation sessions, home studies, dossier preparation assistance, travel arrangements and an escort and translator for couples and singles traveling to China with our program. The process of adopting from China takes approximately 12 to 14 months. At least one parent must travel to China for two weeks. According to Chinese adoption laws, healthy infants are available to people age 30 to 50 who have no children.
Homestudy and Licensing Services
The home study process involves several meetings with an adoption worker to discuss motivation to adopt, background information, and feelings and thoughts about becoming a parent. The home study itself describes you at the time you are preparing to adopt. It will be read by agencies or foreign governments who match you to a prospective child or the child's birthmother. After the home study is completed, the agency will approve you as a pre-adoptive home. Your home will need to be re-approved every two years as required by the State with annual updates being made by the agency.
Right to Know Search Services
Adoptees age 18 or older who were adopted through Catholic Charities of Fairfield County can request a non-identifying background and medical information from the agency. Identifying information can also be requested by adoptees age 18 or older. The agency must obtain written consent of birth parents in order to release information to an adoptee requesting such information. Birth parents or siblings of adult adoptees (age 18 or older) can also request identifying information about their adult adopted birth child. The agency will search for the adoptee and must obtain his or her written consent before releasing information to the birth parent or sibling.
Services to Birthparents
The Adoption Program provides counseling services to birthparents through referral to birthparent counselors. Birthparent counselors will help you decide if placing your baby is the right choice for you. If you choose to place your baby, you can meet the adoptive parents and choose the family you want. If you choose not to place your baby, you will continue to receive the support and counseling of your birthparent counselor for as long as you need it.
